I just finished reading ‘The Moneyless Man’, great read! It made me realise that I’ve been trying to avoid money and trade skills instead for years.
Between my trade-for-cd photography, and the various web sites I made for non-profit organisations that then recommended me to paying companies.. I have to say most of the work I have done for free, has led to something coming back to me, whether through a recommendation, or an actual trade. Some work I have done for nothing in return, but I still feel even if it didn’t come back to me through that person/organisation, it’s a worthwhile thing to donate your time to a non-profit that deserves it and that you believe in.
The best trade I ever did, was a web site in exchange for a hand-crafted wooden item of my choice. At the time, my room was littered with little portable mirrors, the stands of which were all broken due to cheap fittings. So I asked for a sturdy portable mirror in exchange for my web design services. I got the most AMAZING hand-made mirror on it’s own wooden stand, it can swivel up and down, it’s so solid I can pick it up and move it around without fear of it breaking, and the wood is salvaged sycamore with stunning knots and grains throughout. As it turned out, the guy that made me the mirror, didn’t keep the web site going in the end, so I felt I did better in that trade because I treasure my mirror, I feel I’m going to have it for life it’s so solid and so beautiful.
To sum up, if anyone would like to pitch me a trade in exchange for web design services, photography services or even office and photography studio space, please just contact me with details!
